PMRI Research Scopes

The Polar and Marine Research Institute (PMRI) was established in September 2021, bringing together scientists that have been the earliest in China to focus on polar ocean carbon cycle and its biogeochemistry. Aiming at the major scientific problem of global climate change, we have taken ocean acidification and carbon neutrality as the core and main line of research, and have been characterized by multidisciplinary collaborations. In terms of research methods, we have merged datasets including observational and historical data, and supported by techniques from marine environmental chemistry, marine engineering, remote sensing geography, earth modeling, and marine isotope tracing. We can explore the impact of climate change on the marine environment from multiple perspectives of science, engineering, and technology. In terms of research direction, the mechanism of ocean carbon cycle and acidification is the basis for scientific assessment of ocean carbon neutrality in response to the needs of China to cope with climate change and achieve sustainable development. In terms of research scale, we focus from surface ocean to subsurface and deep layers and to sediment-water interface, from intra-seasonal to inter-decadal timescales, which can fully support the tracking of the whole process of ocean carbon neutrality.
In addition, the Institute adheres to the path of international development and strives to have an international perspective in scientific research. It maintains long-term good cooperative relations with leading international carbon cycle research laboratories in the United States, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
